The Festival of Victory
Dashain is Nepal's longest and most important festival, celebrated for 15 days. It marks the victory of good over evil, honoring the goddess Durga. Families come together, elders give blessings (tika) and gifts, and the air fills with joy and the swinging of bamboo swings (ping).
The Festival of Lights
Tihar, also known as Deepawali, spans five days and celebrates different aspects of life. Dogs, cows, and crows are honored on different days. Homes glow with oil lamps and colorful rangoli designs, and sisters tie sacred threads on their brothers' wrists.
The National Dish
Dal Bhat is the staple meal of Nepal — steamed rice served with lentil soup, vegetable curry (tarkari), pickle (achar), and sometimes meat. As the saying goes: 'Dal Bhat power, 24 hour!' — it's the fuel that keeps Nepal going.
Ancient customs alive today
Nepal's rich tapestry of traditions includes prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze, the sacred morning puja rituals, spinning prayer wheels at temples, and the beautiful art of Thangka painting. Over 120 ethnic groups each bring unique customs to this small yet diverse country.
Roof of the World
Nepal is home to 8 of the world's 10 tallest mountains, including Mount Everest (Sagarmatha — सगरमाथा). The mountains shape every aspect of Nepali life — from farming terraces that follow the slopes to the Sherpa communities who have lived among the peaks for centuries.
